Materials Physics and Chemistry is an applied fundamental Discipline, which focuses on the research for various materials, especially the advanced materials, exploring the basic rules of interrelationship between the properties and micro - structures, offering the scientific basis for the development of high - tech and advanced materials. It is an integrated discipline of subjects of science and engineering, aiming to cultivate the research talents with sound fundamental theories of Materials Science and capability of implementation of modern research methods. This discipline is developed based on the specialty of "Metal physics" which was established earliest in the material research area at home. It was one of the first groups in China to be entitled to grant the degrees for Master and Doctor degrees domestically, one of the first groups to be appointed as National Key Discipline, Key Developing Discipline in "211 project". It possesses Laboratory of Environmental Fracture of the State Education Ministry and is the research station for post - doctorial students. It has the honor to have positions for special engaged professors from overseas based the "Yangzi River Awarding Plan". Since the establishment of this discipline, it has become the main base for cultivating the high level academic talents in the national Materials Science area. Academician Ye Heng-qiang is the distinguished representative of many excellent graduated students.
At present, the discipline has a strong professional team with high academic level, including 2 Academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 17 professors, among them are 13 doctorial student supervisors, 2 experts with the title of the national distinguished contribution scholar, 1 special engaged professor by the "Yangzi River Scholar Plan", 1 awardee by "Outstanding Youth Foundation", 2 members of "Talents of Cross Century" approved by the State Education Ministry and 2 elected members by "Cultivation Plan of New Star of Beijing Science and Technology".
The discipline is ranking on the advanced academic level with fruitful research results and enjoying high reputation in the area of Material science domestically and internationally, especially in the follow academic fields: Materials Fracture and the Principle of Environment Induced Fracture; Physical and Chemical Behaviors of Materials Surface and Boundary; Physical Metallurgy Basis of Materials Obdurability. Great attention has been payed to the fundamental research and application of New Functional and Energy Source Materials, such as Materials of Great Magnetic Resistance and High Temperature Superconductors.
Currently, the discipline is carrying out 3 national important fundamental research projects (973 project, responsible for 4 sub - projects), 4 important projects of National Natural Science Foundation, more than 10 comprehensive projects of National Natural Science Foundation and a great deal of projects of ministerial and enterprises cooperation. The materials under research are as bellow: High Temperature Superconductors, Great Magnetic Resistance, Thin Film, Nano Materials, Catalysts, Luminous Materials and New Generation Structured Materials. With the fine academic atmosphere and cherished tradition of "academe, rigorously disciplined", many high qualified academic papers have been published during the past 5 years. Among them, 191 papers have been included by "SCI"; 98 papers included by "EI". More than 10 research results have been awarded with the prizes at national and provincial/ministerial levels.
The discipline of Materials Physics and Chemistry possesses a set of precise equipment and instruments of international advanced level, such as Atomic Force Microscope, Electron-Chemistry Tunnel Scanning Microscope, Nano Indenter, Transmission Electronic Microscope, High Resolution Electronic Microscope, Field Ion Microscope - Atom Probe, X - ray Photo - Electron Spectrum, X - ray Radiation Diffractometer, Mossbaur Spectrum and Magnetron Sputtering System.
