Introduction of Materials Science
Materials Science is an applied fundamental discipline, focusing on the interrelations between the chemical composition, structures, processing, properties and characteristics of materials. Its main task is to provide scientific basis for materials designing, manufacturing, processing optimization and the corresponding practices. The discipline of Materials Science in USTB has been developed based on the earliest established research group of Metal Phase Technology in China (1952), which is one of the National Key Disciplines, one of the National "211 project" key developing disciplines, national scientific research model unit. It has been entitled to offer working station for post - doctoral students and has positions for special accommodated professors from overseas engaged by the "Yangzi River Awarding Plan" approved by The State Education Ministry. The discipline has also been entitled to offer the degrees of Engineering Doctor, Master and Bachelor as well. It now becomes one of the main bases for cultivating superior talents and scientific research in Materials Science of the nation. The distinguished representatives are Academician of Prof. Chen Guo-liang, Prof. Wang Chong-yu and Prof. Zhou Bang-xin. The discipline is involving following units, such as: Department of Materials Science, Department of Inorganic nonmetallic Materials, National Key Laboratory for Advanced Metals and Materials, Beijing Key Laboratory of Corrosion - Erosion and Surface Technology, Institute of Functional Materials and Beijing Key Laboratory of Advanced Powder Metallurgy Materials and Technology.
Currently, in this discipline, there are 1 Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 1 Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 32 professors, 34 associate professors, and l7 lecturers. Among them are 16 ph Dstudent supervisors, 2 special accommodated professors engaged by the "Yangzi River Awarding Plan", 2 elected members of the National "Millions of human source Project", 1 awardee by the "National Outstanding Youth Foundation", 2 elected members of the "cross century talents plan" approved by the State Education Ministry and 1 awardee by "Teaching and Awarding Foundation for National Universities' excellent young teacher". Besides the National Key Laboratories for Advanced Metals and Materials, the discipline has more than ten research branches, including Materials Optimization and Design ( including High Temperature Alloy ), the Principle of Materials Anisotropies and Application, the Applied Basis for Advanced Structured Materials, Magnetic Materials and its Application, Preparation of Composed Materials and Composition materials, Advanced Powder Shaping Technology and Nano Structured Materials, High Technology Functional Thin Film Materials, Magnetic Functional Materials, High Temperature Corrosion and Surface Engineering, Corrosion Control Systematic Engineering, Electrical Chemistry Engineering and Materials, Inorganic Nonmetallic Functional Materials, Inorganic High Temperature Structured Materials, Advanced Ceramic and Functional Gradient Materials, Biologic and Medical Materials and Micro-Electronic Materials. In 2001, during the first period of review and evaluation for "211" project in the "Ninth Five-year Plan", the discipline of Materials Science in USTB received a unanimous high evaluation by the expert team. It was pointed out that the discipline "having been kept the national key discipline level, being top level at home, close or up to the international advanced level and the development of the discipline is satisfied.". Meanwhile, the discipline has entitled again as one of the national key disciplines based on the dominant votes.
The Academic committee for the Materials Science consists of 7 members, they are: Liu Guo-quan (Chairman), Sun Zu-qing, Lu Fan-xiu, Qu Xuan-hui, He Ye-dong, Sun Jia-lin, Li Chang-rong (Secretary). The committee is responsible for making the plan of construction, developing the discipline, arranging and coordinating the teaching activities.
This program is avalaible for senior Scholars as advanced studies. Senior Scholars for advanced studies must complete relevant courses and programs in one year and will receive an advanced studies certificate.
